The Fair Treatment of Seafarers is an important issue for Shipmasters, ship's officers and seamen. The Erika, Prestige and Tasman Spirit were but three of the number of incidents where seafarers were deprived of their liberty and received unwarrantedly severe treatment from public authorities. IFSMA has been concerned with these matters for some time when the establishment of the Joint IMO/ILO Ad Hoc Expert Working Group on the Fair Treatment of Seafarers provided the opportunity to put our case for fair treatment of all seafarers to maritime administrators of every national government. If you have any comment, observation, suggestion, personal experience or knowledge, in your capacity as superintendent, manager or in some other official position, of unfair treatment of seafarers, please feel free to inform us. The back ground papers should inform you of the context of your contribution to the debate. |
