IFSMA Strategic Plan 2024–2029 — Summary
IFSMA (International Federation of Shipmasters’ Associations) represents more than 11,500 shipmasters worldwide. The 2024–2029 Strategic Plan outlines how the organization will strengthen its role as the independent, international voice for serving shipmasters and support safe, competent, and responsible maritime operations.
Mission
To represent the professional interests of serving shipmasters at the international level—particularly at the IMO—while upholding global standards of competence and safety in seafaring.
Vision
To ensure shipmasters are effectively represented in international regulatory work and that member associations remain closely connected to IFSMA’s daily involvement at the IMO.
Aim
To unite shipmasters globally into one professional body that safeguards standards, supports competence, and enables shipmasters to fulfil their responsibilities safely and effectively.
Key Strategic Challenges (2024–2029)
- Skills and Competence of Crews
IFSMA will work to influence STCW amendments, support high-quality training, and ensure shipmasters can fulfil their mentoring responsibilities. - Criminalization of the Shipmaster
The organization aims to reduce unjust criminalization through international regulatory work and by promoting legal protection schemes for shipmasters. - Operation of Ships of the Future
IFSMA will engage in shaping regulations for future vessels, including MASS, and ensure the evolving role of the shipmaster remains clearly defined and protected. - Safety Management
IFSMA advocates for removing shipmasters from watchkeeping duties, reducing administrative burden, and strengthening ISM Code implementation across the industry. - Public Relations and Communications
IFSMA strives to be recognized globally as the authoritative voice of shipmasters, promote knowledge sharing, enhance visibility, and strengthen engagement with members and international bodies.
Communications Priorities
To support these goals, IFSMA will enhance member communication through newsletters, surveys, virtual working groups, campaigns, and a continually improved website. It will also maintain an active presence at IMO, ILO and other global forums.
