Sailors stressed and exhausted after months trapped by Strait of Hormuz blockade

Thousands of sailors have been trapped in or near the Strait of Hormuz since late February due to the US-Israeli war with Iran. According to the article, around 20,000 sailors and approximately 1,600 ships have been unable to leave the Gulf after Iran closed the waterway and restricted passage. Crews described ongoing stress, exhaustion, disrupted routines, and concerns about safety as missiles, mines, drones, naval vessels, and military activity continue in the area.

Ships have also faced growing challenges obtaining supplies, with some reporting sharply increased water costs and difficulties securing food and essential provisions. The article states that at least 11 sailors have been killed and one remains unaccounted for in 39 verified incidents reported by the International Maritime Organisation. Diplomacy remains the main route for ships seeking permission to leave the Gulf.
