Strait of Hormuz Guidance for Transit

The global shipping industry has issued new guidance for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened regional security risks. The advisory warns that vessels may face kinetic threats, electronic warfare, congestion, mines, drones, AIS spoofing, and navigation hazards at the same time. Industry organisations stated that transit planning should consider both security risk and navigational risk, and that operators should continuously reassess whether transit is necessary.

The guidance warns that simultaneous and uncoordinated transits could create unstable traffic conditions, hazardous overtaking situations, and increased grounding or collision risks. The document also highlights concerns about GNSS spoofing or jamming, reduced military oversight, limited salvage capability, and threats from unmanned surface vessels, missiles, drones, and mines. The guidance repeatedly states that the safety of life at sea remains the overriding priority.
