Authorities in Puntland, Somalia, confirmed that five seafarers aboard the tanker Honour 25 were killed as a crackdown continued on pirates operating along the coast. Reports differ on the circumstances of their deaths: the Puntland Maritime Police Force said the pirates killed the crewmembers before the government operation began, while local reports said they were killed after an exchange of gunfire between pirates and Puntland forces. Four other crewmembers were wounded, and the Puntland Maritime Police Force reported that 16 pirates were apprehended and others were pursued. Another vessel, the Togo-flagged Eureka, was driven ashore as pirates attempted to abandon the ship, while its crew of 12 was handed over to local authorities. The Puntland Maritime Police Force said the operations form part of continuing efforts to counter the resurgence of piracy, while Puntland authorities called for continued international cooperation as they work to maintain security along the coastline.
