Representatives from maritime Shipmasters’ associations around the world recently met in London in a hybrid Executive Council (ExCo) meeting to discuss key issues affecting the maritime profession and the future direction of IFSMA. Participants joined both in person and online, reflecting the global nature of the federation.
Among the important initiatives currently being advanced is Shipmaster Insurance – a dedicated protection designed to provide shipmasters with access to legal support and assistance when they are unfairly held personally liable for incidents beyond their control. Protecting the rights, professional standing and legal security of Shipmasters remains a key priority for IFSMA.
The Executive Council also discussed the increasingly difficult conditions faced by seafarers operating in areas affected by armed conflict and regional instability. Recent attacks on shipping and transport workers were highlighted, and IFSMA is calling for the protection of seafarers, respect for their rights, and recognition that civilian maritime personnel must never become targets of conflict. References to recent industry statements on attacks against transport workers were circulated in connection with the meeting.
Strong international cooperation is essential to ensuring that the voice of Shipmasters continues to be heard at the highest levels of the maritime industry.
