Are excessive Bridge Alerts creating a shipboard safety concern?
A paper was presented and debated at the IMO Navigation, Communications, Search & Rescue (NCSR) Sub-Committee regarding the high frequency of Bridge Alerts on board ships that have modern fully integrated bridges. This is reported to occur mostly during pilotage and in high density traffic areas.
Following the outcome of the IMO NCSR Sub-Committee, it is planned to present a paper to the IMO Marine Safety Committee (MSC) in 2027 to expand on the safety related concerns of this issue and to propose solutions.
To ensure IFSMA understands the concerns and views of Shipmasters (and deck officers) we have created a survey linked here (Visit external site. Link opens in a new tab.),
Can you please send this survey link to any active shipmasters/deck officers. It only takes a couple of minutes to complete, responses are anonymous and ship/company names are not reported. https://tinyurl.com/4wew98ys (Visit external site. Link opens in a new tab.)
The survey will remain open until the end of September 2026.
The outcome of this survey will guide IFSMA as to the best way to proceed with this initiative.
